MAKING YOUR OWN LAMPSHADES AT HOME

EMBELLISHED LAMPSHADE

Things Needed

  • Unfinished Lampshade
  • Fabric
  • Fabric Glue
  • Embellishments (lace, beaded trim, rhinestones and sequins)

Procedure

  • Search for an unfinished lampshade in the nearest home improvement store. The basic lampshades are inexpensive and easy to work on.
  • Keep the fabric and glue handy. Choose the color for your fabric as per the color you want for your lampshade.
  • Cover the lampshade with fabric, using glue. Smooth out the fabric as you go around gluing it on the lampshade.
  • Make sure that the glue is applied in small sections, so that it does not dry out immediately.
  • As you reach the rim of the lampshade, glue and tuck the fabric over it. Hold the rim firmly, until the fabric is completely glued down.
  • Leave the lampshade aside, so that the glue dries completely.
  • After the glue is set, adorn the lampshade with embellishments such as lace, beaded trim, rhinestones and sequins.

DECORATIVE LAMPSHADE

Things Required

  • Old Lampshade
  • Raffia Fibers
  • Glue Tape (double sided)
  • Parchment
  • White Lightweight Paper
  • Glue
  • Knife
  • Scissor
  • Tapestry Needle

Procedure

  • Take an old lampshade and open it up. Trace its outline on a white lightweight paper.
  • Now cut the traces into eight sections of equal sizes. Take one of the sections and fold it into half.
  • Sub-divide the folded section in such a way that you again get eight equal sections.
  • Using a pencil, mark each of the folds at every half inch. Join the markings to form a shape of a curved line.
  • Count the 3rd, 5th and 7th fold line on the section and then form a V shape out of it.
  • Place this template on the top of the parchment and then cut out V-shape finely.
  • With the help of the ends of a knife, open up all the V shapes of the parchment. Make more, similar shapes from the parchment.
  • Now fix the back edges of the parchment, using the double-sided tape.
  • Spread glue over the lampshade rings and attach the parchment on it. Be careful to stick on the top ring first. Allow it to dry properly.
  • Sew the top and bottom part of the parchment with the help of needle and raffia.
  • Form tight knots at the free ends of raffia. This will ascertain that it will stay intact without falling apart.

Tips

  • While making lampshade, always go for materials that are absolutely heat friendly.
  • Never put high voltage light fixture inside the lampshade, as this can ruin its safety and durability.
